Building Confidence in a Digital World

At St. Oswald’s CE Primary School, we prepare pupils to thrive in an ever‑changing digital world. We want every child to know more, remember more, and understand more about technology, using their knowledge confidently and responsibly.

Our Computing curriculum encourages curiosity, questioning, and a love of discovery. By focusing on skills development, pupils gain the independence to apply “sticky knowledge” across different subjects and real‑life contexts.


How We Teach Computing

Computing is taught through discrete lessons where pupils make steady progress through the National Curriculum. Learning is practical, active, and hands‑on. Each lesson gives pupils a purpose — from coding a simple game to creating multimedia presentations that communicate clearly and creatively.

We follow the Knowsley Computing Scheme of Work, which supports four key strands of learning:

  • Essential Skills: Pupils learn the core skills needed to use devices confidently and independently.
  • Computer Science: Children explore coding, algorithms, networks, and computational thinking.
  • Information Technology: Pupils gain skills for digital communication, multimedia creation, and data handling.
  • Digital Literacy: Children learn to stay safe, think critically about online content, and understand technology’s role in society.

Each unit builds upon previous learning and provides a clear end point. Pupils work towards purposeful outcomes that showcase their creativity, problem‑solving, and technical understanding.


Progression and Assessment

To ensure steady progress, we use our school’s Computing Coverage and Progression document. This supports consistent delivery of the curriculum from the early stages of learning through to Year 6.

Teachers and leaders regularly monitor learning through pupil voice, evidence scrutiny, and learning walks. These checks help us ensure pupils understand subject vocabulary, essential processes, and how to use technology safely and effectively.


Cross‑Curricular Links

Computing connects with many subjects across our curriculum. It supports creativity, research, and digital presentation in projects across school life:

  • Design and Technology: Pupils use coding and design software to develop ideas — visit our Design and Technology page.

Online Safety and Digital Wellbeing

A key aim of our curriculum is to help children use technology safely, confidently, and responsibly. Pupils learn how to protect their privacy, recognise risks, and maintain a positive digital footprint.

We regularly revisit e‑safety and digital wellbeing through lessons, assemblies, and parent engagement. Our goal is for every pupil to understand both the potential and the responsibilities of the connected world.

Through Computing, pupils gain the knowledge and skills to succeed in today’s digital society. They learn to think logically, solve problems creatively, and communicate effectively.
